Something New At Quapaw: MicroSilk® Hydrotherapy
In collaboration with Jason International, Inc., we are pleased to announce a NEW thermal water bathing experience known as MicroSilk® hydrotherapy. We’ve added new Jason hydrotherapy baths to our existing private bathing area as well as our (soon-to-premier) Quapaw Signature Spa area. So what is MicroSilk?
It’s all about the bubbles. Oxygen-rich microbubbles, to be precise. The patented process supersaturates the water with billions of these little wonders, raising oxygen levels up to 70 percent higher than common tap water.
Measuring only 50 microns in diameter, tiny microbubbles form a cloud in the water and give you a delightful, effervescent sensation. The luxurious blanket of bubbles brings amazing benefits as it delivers a deep breath of nature’s miracle cleanser — OXYGEN. Developed with your skin in mind, MicroSilk creates microbubbles that reach gently into the pores, increasing skin’s metabolism while promoting skin cell growth and the reduction of fine lines, wrinkles and scar formation. MicroSilk improves overall skin cleansing, exfoliation and hydration.

The Quapaw Bathhouse was built in the early 1920s over a natural thermal spring. This particular spring contains one of the highest mineral contents of all of the area springs. A small “man-built” cave created during the construction of the building surrounds the spring today and allows the radiant heat from the naturally flowing 143° water to gather in the room. We believe this small, intimate space will provide a healthy and relaxing addition to your Quapaw experience.
The Legend of the Quapaw Cave
As early as the mid-1800s, stories were told about a cave located down a winding passageway through the tufa stone on this spot where the Quapaw Bathhouse now stands . It was said that the Native American Quapaw tribe soaked in the mud holes and bathed in the thermal springs here. Much research and documentation have been performed since the 1880s and no such cave has ever been located. It is true that the Quapaw used this site for centuries and that the Cherokee, Choctaw and Osage also utilized the springs during their years of forced relocation. Several branches of the Trail of Tears pass nearby.
In the early 1920s, George Callahan, the original president of the Quapaw Bathhouse Company, caused the current tufa stone dome to be erected over a thermal water outlet from the area of the former Magnesia Spring. This spring contains one of the highest and best mineral contents of all the area springs. Into the water of this spring he placed four figurines which he had purchased by mail from a Navajo Indian trader in Arizona. He allowed them to become coated with mineral deposits and then called a gathering of local media to announce the discovery of the Quapaw Gods of the Baths.
It was quickly ascertained that the figurines were not of local design and the publicity stunt was revealed. As luck would have it, the potter of the figurines, a Hopi named Nampayo, became famous and her work quite valuable. The figurines (documented as original Nampayo pieces) were sold to Mr. Callahan as Nampayo Rain Gods in 1922 and are still in the possession of the Callahan family.
